The people writing stories about sexual misconduct arent who you might think

The people writing stories about sexual misconduct arent who you might thinkThe people writing stories about sexual misconduct arent who you might thinkIt may seem as though stories about sexual misconduct are everywhere. And theres a reason for that - when the MeToo movement launched in October 2017, there was a record number of articles about sexual assault, groping, harassment, rape and other forms of misconduct that published over the curse of a few months. The trend peaked in November 2017, when an average of 54 stories on the subject were published each day.Though those headlines may have died down after an initial rush of information, theres still more coverage of sexual misconduct now than before the movement ensued. According to a report by the Womens Media Center (WMC), in August 2018, the categories of reporting they researched in regard to MeToo remained up overall from the beginning of our study, clearly showing that the media is paying more attention. But as a barrage o f knowledge rains down on the American people, the WMC took the time to look at who gets to narrate MeToo. And its bedrngnis who you might think.According to WMCs report, between May 2017 and August 2018, 47% of the bylines on articles about sexual misconduct in 14 of the countrys most circulated newspapers belonged to women, compared to 53% that belonged to men. Before MeToo hit in October 2017, the trend was even starker - only 45% of stories related to sexual misconduct were written by women. After October 2017, women wrote a larger proportion of relevant articles, but overall, the majority of bylines still belonged to men. These statistics are actually more equal than the national average for the gender distribution of bylines in newspapers across all stories, where women rank around 40% of bylines, according to WMC. But it may still come as a surprise that women are not usually the ones writing articles about an issue that disproportionately affects them, especially as two-thir ds of graduates with degrees in mass communications or journalism are women. This breakdown becomes even more important to understand in context, with the realization that male and female reporters write very different stories when it comes to sexual misconduct. In a 2015 report, Writing Rape How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault, WMC found that women only wrote 31% of the bylined stories about campus rape. When they did, their reportage was often informed by a more victim-focused perspective.Women journalists interviewed alleged victims more often than male journalists, and a higher proportion of women journalists wrote about the impact of the alleged attack on alleged victims, according to WMC. Forty percent of women journalists covered this aspect of stories, versus 33% of male journalists. A higher proportion of male journalists used quotes about the behavior of our impact on the alleged perpetrator than did female journalists - 35% versus 32%.There are male journa lists who have done some of the industrys pioneering work on sexual misconduct. Ronan Farrow, the New Yorkers investigative reporter, won a Pulitzer after he published an expos on movie mogul Harvey Weinsteins alleged sexual misconduct. Farrow is known as one of the foremost journalists reporting on sexual misconduct today, and his coworker Jane Mayer recently said his supportive nature is often what makes survivors feel as though they can speak up.And so men can clearly report about MeToo in an impactful way, but research suggests their approach is still different from their female peers. The MeToo movement has opened up the floodgates for real conversation about sexual misconduct in the personal and professional spheres. Now, the question is, whos leading the discussion?

What Does it Mean When Management Starts Neglecting Employees

What Does it Mean When Management Starts Neglecting EmployeesWhat Does it Mean When Management Starts Neglecting EmployeesComing to work on a Monday morning to find upper management tight-lipped is an uneasy feeling. Some say it could be a sign of impending layoffs or bad things to come but should you start packing up, or speak up?Decoding the SilenceFirst youll have to play detective and try and figure out what it means if management starts to neglect employees. There are a number of possible scenarios and they dont all mean that you are being laid off. It could be your babo who is leaving. It could a coworker. It could be nobody at all. Executives get a case of the Mondays every once in a while too. Even if this is the case, there are steps to take according to the Career Doctor Randall S. Hansen, founder of Quintessential Careers. Hansen believes any lull in the conversation could be bad for the employee. You have a new boss who is either too busy to meet with you or simply brushes you off. This issue alone is not enough to think layoff, but try to remedy this situation as quickly as possible. If your new (or current) boss does not totally understand all the things you do for your job, you become more expendable when budgets get cut, says Hansen,As Hansen says having an open line of communication with your higher-up is important for a number of reasons. At the very least your boss needs to know how hard you are working and in a culture of job cuts and layoffs, this might be doubly important.Employment writer Gregory P. Jacobson warns bosses and managers to keep information flowing, especially if tough times are ahead, in his article Dont Neglect Employee Morale in a Down Economy.Individuals tend to think the worst in difficult situations. Lack of communication can lead employees to assume their jobs are at risk. In addition to low morale and lack of motivation, neglecting to communicate with employees could push them to search for new employers, writes Jacobso n.If all else fails, and the boss continues with the silent treatment then being prepared is a good option says executive/career coach and 15-year recruiting veteran Darrell Gurney. In his article Create an Emergency Layoff Plan for Your Family. Gurney gives tips to help prepare you and your family if a layoff is in your future.Having a plan can help you handle even the worst-case scenario.

Customer Service Lessons from the TSA Story

Customer Service Lessons from the TSA StoryCustomer Service Lessons from the TSA StoryCustomer Service Lessons from the TSA Story MatusonSummertime and the living is easy. That is as long as you dont have to fly anywhereIts been all over the news lengthy delays in airport security lines are creating headaches for summer travelers. While the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has taken swift action, the situation illustrates the perils of seasonal staffing and providing consistent customer service. In fact, when it comes to serving the public, there are no simple answers about how to effectively do so all of the time. Here are some customer service lessons from the TSA story that we can all apply to our businesses.Dont Skimp on HiringOne of the reasons cited for the long security lines is a common issue for many businesses accurately predicting customer behavior. According to Travel Market Report, positive reaction to the TSAs Pre-Check program prompted the agency to reduce its workforce by 10%. Unfortunately, customers didnt follow through as planned. What you can learn New products and services are likely to introduce new staffing challenges. Will customer adoption go as planned? Cutting back on staffing too early in the process can jeopardize your customer service and staffing levels.Just as with airport security, your customers have an expectation regarding service. Disappoint them once and they may stick around. Do this a second time and most likely theyll take their business elsewhere. Its understandable that you dont want people standing around doing nothing when business is slow. However, if you cut the staff levels too deeply, you risk alienating those customers youve worked so hard to acquire.Use your sales data as best you can to understand customer patterns and then staff accordingly.Plan for Seasonal SpikesAccording to a recent NPR article, an improved economy is likely to mean record-breaking levels of summer air travel. That means TSA wo rkers are going to face even more challenging conditions in the months ahead. Employee engagement will be more important than ever. What you can learn If youre staffing a small business, take a look at your revenue streams. Are there particular times of day or year when demand is higher? Is your particular industry expected to landsee record demand this year?If so, be sure your new hires are trained and ready to go the moment you need them. If your workflow is unpredictable, consider hiring contingent workers through a local staffing agency. This will enable you to quickly expand and contract your workforce as business needs dictate.Remember too that, no matter what size your business, there is always work to be done. Hire people who are able to do more than just the job you hired them for. This will allow you to shift your resources to those areas where you need them most.Hire on Traits. Train for Skill. Most would agree that employees who are staffing the TSA security lines are wor king under extreme conditions. It certainly cant be easy trying to manage a system that processes massive numbers of people while maintaining security measures. Thats where exceptional customer service skills are essential. It starts with a simple please or thank you to help cool off an overheated customer. Yet these words are not readily part of everyones vocabulary. What you can learn When hiring employees who will be directly interacting with customers and clients its best to look for people who have a desire to please. These are individuals who take pride in being helpful and who have an aptitude for better customer service. These qualities are more important than their having experience in your particular product area. You can train new hires in your process its harder to train people to care.Figure Out Whats Not WorkingThe TSA is working diligently to address the long security lines that travelers are experiencing. They are also being forthright and letting passengers know that i t wont be an overnight fix. What you can learn Survey your customers to find out what may be of concern to them. Then ask your employees who are closest to these problems for suggestions on how to fix areas that will improve customer satisfaction.Regular communication with your customers will help set expectations when doing business with your company. Companies of all sizes should use social media channels, such as Facebook or Twitter, to keep customers informed and to address a crisis.Check your Employee Departure LoungeThe TSA has struggled to reduce persistent turnover. This is particularly concerning when public safety is at stake.Employee turnover can have a crippling impact on businesses, especially those that rely heavily on experienced people with strong relationship-building skills.Whatever your business, customers feel more secure doing business with companies that have a stable workforce. What you can learn Look around your own organization. How many employees are currentl y in the departure lounge, waiting to take the next flight out of your company? Take measures to ensure they are willing to reconsider their plans to land somewhere else.To counteract turnover, regularly conduct stay interviews with employees (or groups of employees.) That may be one of the best ways to preempt a regular stream of exit interviews.

4 Questions to Ask Potential eDiscovery Vendors

4 Questions to Ask Potential eDiscovery Vendors4 Questions to Ask Potential eDiscovery VendorsDocument review is an essential part of eDiscovery, a process that can often demand a great deal of time, money and other resources. The requirements can be particularly challenging for small law firms or legal departments of smaller companies. To streamline the process, many smaller departments turnto outside eDiscovery vendors. At larger firms and corporate legal departments, the litigation support manager or a senior paralegal often manages the decision-making process for choosing the right vendor. At smaller firms, however, lead associates or sometimes general counsel are tasked with making the choice. No matter who is in charge of the selection process, its essential that they ask the right questions, so they can pinpoint the best eDiscovery vendor for their unique needs. To identify the most important questions, we talked to Sunny Sanghani, Robert Half Legals associate director for eDisc overy, managed review, and consulting services. Here are four essential questions to ask before you hire an eDiscovery vendor for document review1.How will you handle my case requests? This point is particularly important for small firms looking to host their first review. Small firms should ask whether theyll be interacting with a partner who actually understands the process, or working with a ticketing system that just completes tasks, Sanghani says. The vendors answer to this question is key, because many smaller firms will need comprehensive, one-on-one support throughout the entire document-review process.2. How is my data being secured? The safety of sensitive and confidential data is always crucial for law firms and legal departments. So its essential to ask the vendor how your data will be secured both while its being stored and when its in transit. Once you hire a vendor, you should also establish confidentiality and data-security safeguards by requiring the vendor to sign ai rtight confidentiality agreements.3.Can you send me some references? One of the quickest ways to determine the quality of an eDiscovery vendor is to speak with other firms and organizations that have used their services. Request a list of references from each vendor, and contact these companies for a quick interview. Ask whether theyve been satisfied with the vendors overall performance, attention to detail, customer service, pricing and response time.4.What is your pricing structure? Its important to ask about an eDiscovery vendors costsas early in the process as possible. However, dont simply ask for a ballpark estimate. Youre looking for full cost transparency. Sanghani recommends you ask specific pricing questions, such as How detailed is the billing for hourly line items and per-unit costs? What can I expect to pay for these per project? How often will my rates be updated to reflect market availability and our needs?Although its an additional expense, hiring an eDiscovery documen t review vendor can save you a significant amount of time and money in the long run, especially if you look for vendors that offer eDiscovery solutions that can be tailored to your companys needs. External companies provide trained staff, facilities, equipment and expertise that will slash the overall time and cost of document review.Have you hired document review vendors?
